October 1, 2001 Established 1983 Fall Convocation Focuses on Attack By Ashleigh Radford Managing Editor With Reeves auditorium full of students, Reverend Ben jamin Wells opened this year’s Fall Convocation with a prayer, followed by an inspirational song from the Scholarship Vo cal Ensemble. Athletic Director, Robert Envoy, followed the ensemble and presented several athletic awards to outstanding stu dents. Among those awards pre sented was the female scholar athlete of the year, which was given to tennis player Elena Bryxina who has held an out standing 4.3 GPA. The male scholar athlete of the year award was given to political science major Mike Carpentier who has held a 3.9 GPA. Elena Blanina was awarded the Sykes cup. She is a member of the tennis team and was conference player of the year and All American in both singles and doubles. Hendricks speaking at the Convocation. Following the athletic awards Sears’ representative, Robert Cox, presented the national championship women’s golf team with a one thousand dollar check and a crystal trophy. Student Government President Lindsay Spitzer ac knowledged the SGA offic ers. She reminded the rest of the student body of SGA’s presence. “We will continue to make this campus better, Photo Bv Kel/ev McConnell no matter what happens,” stated Spitzer. Spitzer then introduced the speaker Elton Hendiicks, president of Methodist Col lege.. Hendricks’ speech focused on the recent terrorist attacks on New Yo/k City and the Pentagon. Three main points were in troduced: National reaction; Being a college student dur ing the terrorist attacks; and being in a Christian college during this national tragedy. In his speech Hendricks made it clear that the stu dents, staff, and faculty need to understand and respect all religions, including Islam. Hendricks backed up his statement with a story about his Islamic friend from college. “The Islam religion is not to blame for this act; terror ists are to blame for this act,” Hendricks said. “We should love our enemies and pray for them.” After Hendricks spoke, everyone sang the Alma Mater which, was led by the Scholarship Vocal Ensemble. MC Late Night Express Presents By Ashleigh Radford Managing 1-ditor MC Late Night Express challenges the limits of the pos sible by creating a Western themed night, something which had not previously been done. The fun-filled night included barbeque ribs, pool, ping- pong, and simulated bull riding. Free grilled ribs started out the evening by taming hungry stomachs. The night also included some pool tips for those desiring to learn a little bit more about the billard table. Dr. Que was a big hit at the pool table. The life-looking bull was also a big event for the late night happenings. Several stu dents partook in the riding fun. Others were skeptical about it. “I wanted to ride it but I heard someone got hurt and I chickened out,” said Anderson. Students also enjoyed the night by playing ping-pong at the event. Some students were challenged by others Many just showed off their skills. For those not interested in playing, onlook ers cheered for their favorite players. “I played ping | pong with the’ student activities director. He was really good,” Jer emy Anderson said.
